A polished portfolio is table stakes. The traits that actually determine whether a white-label partnership works long-term are less visible on a website — here’s what to look for in a white label web design partner.
Do they ask questions before quoting?
A partner who quotes a price off a two-line request without asking anything is either guessing or padding the number to cover the unknowns. Good partners ask before they price.
How do they handle communication during the project?
Ask specifically: how will you update me on progress? What happens if something in the brief turns out to be unclear mid-build? Vague answers here predict vague communication later.
What’s their actual white-label discipline?
Ask directly whether their name, logo, or watermark appears anywhere — code comments, email headers, contract language your client could ever see. A true white-label partner has this locked down completely.
Can they show relevant past work?
Not just any portfolio — work similar in scope and complexity to what you’ll be sending them. A partner great at brochure sites isn’t automatically great at ecommerce or custom apps.
What does their revision and dispute process look like?
Ask what happens if you’re not happy with a delivery. Clear, pre-agreed revision terms protect you; vague “we’ll work it out” answers often mean it hasn’t been tested by real conflict yet.
Do they offer a small pilot project?
Reputable partners are usually comfortable starting with one smaller project rather than requiring a big commitment upfront. Hesitation here is worth noting.
What’s their capacity, honestly?
Ask how many other agencies they’re currently working with. A partner stretched thin will show it in turnaround time, even if the work quality holds up.
Bottom line
The portfolio tells you what they can build. Everything above tells you whether they’ll be a reliable partner once real projects and real deadlines are on the line.
